Oxford University Press is spearheading the drive towards paid-for content with its excellent Oxford Reference Online site. Although the site isn't visually riveting, it gives its tens of thousands of users accurate and concise information from more than 100 quality reference sources - fast. And that's why it's been crowned Internet Magazine's Site of the Year for 2002.
The site took more than two years to develop at a cost of more than £1 million. At its launch, there were 1.5 million entries listed - around 30 million words. That's a lot of knowledge.
"It's never been so easy to be a know it all," one member of the Internet Magazine team said. "I hate libraries, but I love this."
